Pine Trees

Both in the Japanese and Chinese culture, the evergreen pine is regarded as a symbol of longevity, good fortune and steadfastness. During the cold a long winter the pine remains green and does not shed it leaves at all, this has turned into a symbol of endurance and being able to overcome hardships and challenges. 

In the above example by Hasui, evergreen pine trees are depicted in the foreground, a good luck symbol that is offering protection and auspiciousness to the lone figure depicted on the beach.
