Hugh Montgomerie, the 12th Earl of Eglinton, was appointed a Knight of the Thistle in 1859, Scotland’s highest chivalric honour, named after its emblem and national flower. Although this prestigious honour was conferred upon him by the Prince Regent, the Earl gained significant satisfaction that it held him "under no political obligation."
