The warrior shown is Takagi Umanosuke, a hero from Kuniyoshi’s illustrated adaptations of the Chinese epic Suikoden (Shuihu zhuan). As he undertakes a test of courage in a haunted temple, another man attempts to frighten him with an inflatable ghost.
