The first patented corkscrew in England was by Samuel Henshaw in 1795. However, earlier designs of a corkscrew was based on a tool called a gun worm, used to remove an unfired bullet from a musket's barrel. Since many manufacturers in the 19th century made gun worms, they also made corkscrews.
