BIRTHDAY UNION JACK

For centuries until the kingdoms in the UK united, the flag of the union jack was restricted to use at sea. This was the likely origin of the name ‘union jack’ since it was flown from the jack staff of the ship. It was not until 1908 that the name 'union jack' became official and approved by parliament.
