The name Fritillaria is derived from the Latin word "fritillus" for "dice cup", referring to the shape of the flowers. "Persica" means “Persian”, which refers to the modern country of Iran. The flower belongs to the lily family Liliaceae. Illustration by botanist Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759–1840).
