Each protagonist of the Suikoden, the Japanese translation of a 14th century Chinese novel, can be identified by a specific tattoo, weapon or piece of clothing. The warrior Shi Shin depicted here has a tattoo of nine azure dragons, that gives him the nickname Kyumonryo - literally “Nine-Dragons Tattoo”. By Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798–1861).
