The painting depicts the landscape seen from the bank of the Rhône, a couple minutes walk from the Yellow House where Van Gogh was living at the time. The artist was highly inspired by the nocturnal scene: in a letter to the sister he stated that “the night is more alive and more richly coloured than the day”.
