The origins of the word "naughty" comes from the Old English "nawiht", meaning "nothing". (Hence the word "naught" still used today.) In the early 15th century, the word meant to be poor, to have nothing, and then developed to describe the "wicked" or "immoral". By the early 17th century, the word had softened to mainly refer to disobedient children.
