Intended to be exchanged with the “Self-portrait, Les Misérables” painted by his friend Paul Gauguin, the “Self-portrait as a bonze” represents Van Gogh as a Japanese priest (bonze), which, according to the painter’s idealised belief, was someone devoted to the contemplation of the mysteries of existence and living in harmony with nature.
