While studying at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, Van Gogh painted this humoristic memento mori, probably during an anatomy class. Some argue that Van Gogh used the picture to ridicule the teaching methods at the Academy, where anatomy was being taught with skeletons instead of living human models.
