The wheat field series by Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) feature cypresses, a symbol of immortality, and emblem of eternal life after death. Van Gogh was pioneer in the use of the technique “impasto”, where the rich texture of the paint adds dimension, movement and emotion to the painting. The artist regarded this piece as one of his best summer landscapes.
