Avalokiteshvara in Sanskrit, the Chinese name Guanyin is short for Guanshiyin, which means The One Who Perceives the Sounds of the World. This bodhisattva of infinite compassion is often referred to as the Goddess of Mercy and is one of the most commonly depicted Buddhist figures in Chinese art.
