In Chinese culture toads are considered auspicious animals and appear in many folk tales and proverbs. They symbolise immortality and longevity and are also believed to bring good fortune and wealth. Zhang Xiong (1803-1886) was a Chinese artist active in Shanghai and a skilled painter, calligrapher and poet.
