The city of St Albans measures 7 square miles (18.1 km2). St Albans City and District was formed in 1974 as a merger of the city with the neighbouring districts including Harpenden. The Hot Cross Bun is said to have developed by Brother Thomas Rocliffe, a monk at St Albans Abbey, who distributed the bun to the local poor on Good Friday starting in 1381.
