THE LAST BID OF CHARLES DICKENS (1870)

An auction of Charles Dickens’s belongings took place on 10th August 1870, just two months after his death. Held at Gad’s Hill Place, it drew large public interest. Among the items sold was his cherished writing desk, symbolising the end of a literary era.
