The earliest written record describing a palette is by the Dukes of Burgundy in the late 1460s as 'trenchers of wood for them [painters] to put oil colours on and to hold them in the hand.' The earliest illustrations depicted, are in the hands of female painters, as depicted in Boccaccio's book of Famous Women dating around 1400.
