William Mason(1837-1913) was a pattern maker, engineer and inventor. Whilst working for Colt’s Patent Fire Arms Manufacturing Company, Mason produced the .45 Colt, which was chosen by the Army in 1872, resulting in a first order shipping in the summer of 1873 for 8,000 revolvers.
