ABOUT THE ARTIST

Hiroaki Takahashi was born in Tokyo, 1871. Takahashi was an artist from a young age, where he'd get his artistic name of Shotei by his uncle. At the age of 16, Shotei would start to work for the Imperial Household Department of Foreign Affairs, where he copied the designs of the foreign ceremonial objects. After finishing art studies, Shotei and Kogyo founded the Japan Youth Painting society in 1889. Shotei, considered a successful artist in 1907, was recruited by Watanabe Shozaburo to contribute to souvenir prints in japan.
