ABOUT THE ARTIST
Kunichika Toyohara was born in 1883, Tokyo. He was an ukiyo-e Japanese woodblock print artist during the Meiji period. The artist started his training at the age of 12, and later at the age of 14 trained under Kunisada Utagawa and started producing actor prints in the 1850s. He began to develop his own style and was most known for his dramatic portraits of actors (yakusha-e), inspired by kabuki drama.
