ABOUT THE ARTIST

Kasamatsu Shiro was born in Tokyo in 1898, starting his artistic career at age 13 by becoming the apprentice of Kaburagi Kiyokata, a master of the traditional Bijin-ga, beautiful women, prints. Beginning his career as a painter, Kaburagi encouraged the young pupil to design woodblock prints for the famed publisher Shozaburo Watanabe, later working with the publisher Unsodo before the late 1950's when he began working in the Sosaku-hanga style by carving and printing his own designs.
