ABOUT THE ARTIST
Yamamoto Shoun was born in Kochi in 1870. He was a Japanese painter and illustrator active around the turn of the 20th century. Initially, he trained with the traditional Kano school, and then with the Nanga school - a movement of landscape painting inspired by classical East-Asian traditions. He worked as illustrator for magazines, and produced series of interesting prints of beautiful women or bijinga, as well as prints portraying women and children, often with a touch of humour likely inspired by Utamaro’s works and contemporary cartoons.
